Mike Phelan "proud" of Hull City players

Hull City manager Mike Phelan says that he is "proud" of his players despite seeing their unbeaten start to the season come to an end at the hands of Manchester United.

Hull City caretaker manager Mike Phelan has said that he is "proud" of his players despite their 1-0 defeat to Manchester United this evening.

The Tigers went into the campaign without a permanent boss and with just 13 fit players, but still managed to win their opening two matches under Phelan.

That unbeaten start came to an end at the KCOM Stadium today, although it took United until the 92nd minute to find the breakthrough courtesy of Marcus Rashford.

"It is disappointing for the players, they have put a serious amount of work in to get to a point where they think they have a result. You are playing quality sides who bring quality off the bench, but I am proud of the players. They have put hard work in today without getting anything out of it," he told reporters.

"In the first half we were competitive and looked solid, we had a great chance before United scored. You have to be proud of the desire they showed. The Hull players are good players, and good people. They are determined and earned the right to be at this level.

"They worked hard for 12 months to be here. We have six points from nine and that is what dreams are made of with 13 players are fit. I am not going to complain or find fault with the players. We have been trying extremely hard to get players in and now have a small window. We have two or three in the pipeline but they are not done."

Hull will resume their campaign away to Burnley after the international break.
