Mick McCarthy hopeful of challenging for promotion

Mick McCarthy believes that Ipswich Town's recent improvement gives them a good chance of winning promotion this season.

Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy has admitted that promotion is on his mind after seeing his side claim a 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night.

Jonathan Williams scored the crucial goal at Hillsborough to earn Ipswich a point, and McCarthy refused to hide his target when quizzed about Ipswich's hopes this season.

"I'm happy with the squad and even though it's a dirty word and we can't mention it, we want to get promoted," the Ipswich boss told reporters.

"We set off with designs of top six. I don't think we're one of the best teams or best squads in the league, although we're a competent squad, hard to beat and we've certainly improved.

"We'll keep scrapping away and see where we end up."

Ipswich are currently fifth in the Championship table.
