Ipswich Town leapfrog Watford with late win

Ipswich Town leapfrog Watford in the Championship with a 1-0 win over the Hornets at Portman Road.

Ipswich Town have leapfrogged Watford up to fourth in the Championship thanks to Tommy Smith's late winner at Portman Road.

The first chance of the game fell to Watford when Gianni Munari was released by Fernando Forestieri but the Italian was thwarted by Bartosz Bialkowski.

Daryl Murphy almost opened the scoring for Ipswich but his header was cleared at the back post by a combination of Joel Ekstrand and Juan Paredes.

The Hornets went close to grabbing the first goal when Matej Vydra's low cross narrowly evaded Daniel Pudil on 35 minutes, before Troy Deeney had an effort blocked from around 12 yards out.

Stephen Hunt had the first real chance of the second period when he raced onto David McGoldrick's flick, but the Irishman's lob could only bounce onto the roof of the Watford net.

Forestieri then wasted a glorious chance for Watford when he blasted over from close range after another dangerous delivery from Vydra.

The visitors were made to pay for the miss when Tommy Smith got on the end of Kevin Bru's smashed cross to turn the ball home with just seven minutes remaining.
