Liverpool "pleased" to draw Champions League holders Real Madrid

Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre says that the club are happy to go up against Champions League holders Real Madrid in the group phase.

Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre has insisted that the club are excited to face Champions League winners Real Madrid in the group phase of the tournament.

The Merseyside outfit are returning to the elite competition following a five-year absence after finishing as runners-up to Manchester City in the Premier League last season.

In today's draw in Monaco, Liverpool learned that they will face Madrid, Basel and Ludogorets Razgrad, who have reached the group stage for the first time in their existence.

When asked by Sky Sports News for his immediate reaction, Ayre said: "Pleased. I just spoke to Brendan Rodgers - he watched from his office at the training ground.

"They're all tough groups, but we're pleased with the group. It's especially special to have Real Madrid in the group. Five-time winners playing against someone who has just won it for a 10th time makes it a special competition."

The first round of group matches will be played on September 16 and September 17.
