Dirk Kuyt claims that his Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard would have been the perfect choice as the new England captain.

Dirk Kuyt has claimed that Steven Gerrard should be the man to captain England after Scott Parker was given the armband ahead of his Liverpool teammate.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Parker was selected as skipper ahead of Gerrard for the 3-2 defeat to Holland but Kuyt believes that Gerrard is the perfect man to lead his country into Euro 2012.

"Stevie is the main one for the England team to be the captain. On and off the pitch he is such a personality. It is the manager of England who makes the decision but in my eyes he is the main one," said Kuyt.

"He is the perfect leader for Liverpool and for the England team."

Gerrard has reportedly given Scott Parker his backing for the role.
