Brendan Rodgers: 'Steven Gerrard could return as coach'

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers says that Steven Gerrard could return to the club as a coach in the future.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has tipped Steven Gerrard to return to the club as a coach.

The Reds skipper revealed his decision to move away at the end of the season on Friday to end a 26-year association with the Anfield side.

Gerrard is reportedly considering several offers from Major League Soccer, and Rodgers believes that the midfielder could return to the club in coaching capacity in the future.

"He's someone who deserves the utmost respect and you only have to look at what the guy has done in the game," Rodgers told reporters. "His decision is made for him and his family.

"He's been an iconic figure for this football club and he's been a fantastic captain for me in my time here. Of course I wanted him to stay here and he wasn't ready to move into coaching.

"He still sees himself very much as a player but when that time comes then maybe that is something we can look at. He would be somebody that would be brilliant back here, but at the moment, his concentration is on his football."

Gerrard scored twice as the Reds were held to a 2-2 draw with Leicester City on New Year's Day.
