Barcelona are on the verge of announcing a new five-year deal for Lionel Messi, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Lionel Messi has reportedly agreed a new five-year contract with Barcelona.

The 34-year-old is currently a free agent, having seen his previous deal at Camp Nou expire, and Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain have both been linked with the Argentina international.

However, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Messi has agreed a contract with the Catalan giants until June 2026, and the club are preparing to make an official announcement.

The forward attempted to leave Barcelona last summer but ultimately stayed at Camp Nou and enjoyed an impressive 2020-21 campaign, scoring 38 times and registering 14 assists in 47 appearances.

Messi has been free to enter into discussions with foreign clubs since the start of the year, but Romano claims that the South American has never considered joining another team.

The Copa America winner has scored 672 goals and registered 305 assists in 778 appearances for Barcelona, winning 10 La Liga titles and four Champions League crowns in the process.
