Manchester United team news: Injury, suspension list vs. Aston Villa

Sports Mole rounds up all of Manchester United's latest injury and suspension news ahead of their Premier League Boxing Day clash with Aston Villa.

Seeking to snap an abysmal four-game run without a win or a goal, Manchester United host Aston Villa at Old Trafford in a Premier League Boxing Day fixture.

The Red Devils were condemned to their eighth top-flight loss of the season at the London Stadium on Saturday, where Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus propelled West Ham United to a 2-0 victory.

On account of suffering their worst start to a season since 1930-31 - when they were relegated from the top tier - Erik ten Hag's men are down in eighth place in the table, eight points adrift of the Champions League spot.

Here, Sports Mole rounds up Man United's latest injury and suspension news ahead of the clash with Villa, who missed the chance to go top as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Sheffield United last time out.

Rasmus Hojlund

Status: Minor doubt
Type of injury: Illness
Possible return date: December 26 (vs. Aston Villa)

Rasmus Hojlund was on the field for under an hour against West Ham, and Ten Hag revealed that a recent illness had contributed to his withdrawal, but he should be given the green light to feature on Boxing Day.

Anthony Martial

Status: Minor doubt
Type of injury: Illness
Possible return date: December 26 (vs. Aston Villa)

Similarly, Anthony Martial was not in the squad whatsoever at the London Stadium owing to an illness of his own, and he is facing a race against time to prove his fitness for the midweek battle.

Raphael Varane

Status: Minor doubt
Type of injury: Illness
Possible return date: December 26 (vs. Aston Villa)

The third high-profile victim of the sickness bug sweeping through Carrington, Raphael Varane was also unable to face the Hammers - offering 19-year-old Willy Kambwala the chance to make his Premier League debut - and it remains to be seen if his immune system wins out in time for Tuesday.

Casemiro

Status: Out
Type of injury: Hamstring
Possible return date: January 14 (vs. Tottenham Hotspur)

Casemiro - who is being linked with a January exit from Old Trafford - is still facing a couple more weeks on the sidelines with the severe hamstring injury he sustained against Newcastle United in the EFL Cup on November 1.

Tyrell Malacia

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: January 14 (vs. Tottenham Hotspur)

Tyrell Malacia is yet to make his first appearance of the new term due to a niggling knee injury, which he recently went under the knife for, but he is also on track to return to first-team duty next month.

Lisandro Martinez

Possible return date: January 14 (vs. Tottenham Hotspur)

Likewise, Lisandro Martinez should be pushing for a comeback in the middle of January as he bids to consign his foot problems to the past, having been forced to undergo a procedure after aggravating the injury he picked up in April.

Amad Diallo

Amad Diallo is now involved in full training for Man United after sustaining a severe knee injury in pre-season, but there is still no indication when the Ivorian attacker might be seen on the field again.

Harry Maguire pulled up with a groin injury in Man United's Champions League loss to Bayern Munich on December 12, and Ten Hag does not expect the English defender to return until the second week of January at the earliest.

Mason Mount

Possible return date: January 14 (vs. Tottenham Hotspur)

Summer signing Mason Mount is making progress in his recovery from a calf concern, but Ten Hag recently stated that he does not expect the playmaker to return until the middle of next month.

Aside from the exiled Jadon Sancho, Man United have no players suspended for this game, as Diogo Dalot is back from the one-game ban he served against West Ham.
