Tommy Docherty: 'David Moyes is a great choice'

Former Manchester United boss Tommy Docherty believes that David Moyes is the right man to step into Sir Alex Ferguson's shoes at the club.

Former Manchester United manager Tommy Docherty has backed David Moyes to prove himself to be the best replacement for Sir Alex Ferguson.

Moyes has enjoyed a run of good form recently having made a shaky start to his time in charge of the Red Devils, seeing his side go nine matches unbeaten after winning just two of their opening six league games.

Docherty revealed that Moyes would have been his choice to succeed Ferguson, basing his judgement on the 50-year-old's record during his time in charge of Everton.

"David Moyes is a great choice, he was my choice as well. He did a great job at Everton with not a lot of money or great players. He did really, really well and I hope he does well again," Docherty told PA.

"I just looked at his record at Everton. If you have money and you need to go into the market, you don't buy a 'could be' or 'a maybe' or 'a might be', you are buying a sure thing.

"It is a club that every young boy wants to play for. The biggest problem I had was getting players to leave Manchester United. You had no problem getting them coming in. But they didn't want to leave, that was the biggest problem."

Docherty spent five years in charge of United between 1972 and 1977, leading the Red Devils to promotion back into the top flight and an FA Cup success.
