Rene Meulensteen has Sir Alex Ferguson backing

Rene Meulensteen claims that Alex Ferguson has backed him to lead Fulham's resurgence and prove his managerial qualities.

Rene Meulensteen has claimed that Sir Alex Ferguson has backed him to lead Fulham's resurgence and prove his managerial qualities.

The Cottagers have claimed just nine points since the Dutchman took charge at Craven Cottage in December, resulting in the Londoners sitting rooted to the foot of the Premier League table ahead of Sunday's trip to Manchester United.

Nevertheless, Meulensteen, who spent 12 years at Old Trafford working under the legendary Scot, reveals that he has been backed to transform the club's fortunes by the best in the business.

"[Ferguson] has reassured me," he told The Telegraph. "He said, 'I know what you are capable of doing. You've got great qualities. Just stick to your beliefs and you'll turn things around'."

Tomorrow's clash in Manchester kicks off at 4pm.
