Gary Neville says that Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw needs to "mature" after withdrawing from last weekend's match against Swansea City due to fitness concerns.

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has claimed that Luke Shaw needs to "mature" after declaring himself unfit for last weekend's game against Swansea City.

Manager Jose Mourinho appeared to accuse Shaw of not being brave enough when he and defender Chris Smalling ruled themselves out of Sunday's 3-1 victory at the Liberty Stadium.

The England international, who suffered a double fracture last year, was reportedly baffled by Mourinho's comments, but Neville has warned Shaw that United will 'take no prisoners'.

"I think Luke is a complex character," Neville told Sky Sports News. "He is young, has moved away from Southampton and he needs to mature physically and mentally.

"He is such a huge talent but obviously has had injury problems and is not over them from a mental point of view and he needs to work on that.

"He is a young person with big expectation, but he is now in the spotlight at a big club and Manchester United doesn't take prisoners."

United currently sit sixth in the Premier League table, eight points behind leaders Liverpool.
