Jamie Redknapp: 'Anthony Martial has made Manchester United title contenders'

Jamie Redknapp believes that Anthony Martial's instant impact with Manchester United has made the Red Devils contenders for the Premier League title.

Jamie Redknapp has claimed that the impact of Anthony Martial has turned Manchester United into contenders to win the Premier League title.

The Red Devils signed the 19-year-old for a fee in the region of £36m just before the close of the transfer window in September, and Martial has made an instant impression at the club by scoring five goals in his first nine matches.

Redknapp believes that the Frenchman has given Louis van Gaal's men the firepower to contend with Manchester City in the race for the top-flight crown.

He told Sky Sports News: "The addition and impact of Anthony Martial has transformed Manchester United's situation this season. Before he came to the club, I didn't put them anywhere near mounting a title challenge. Nowhere near. Now, if they beat Manchester City, they will believe they can do it.

"There's no excuse now. Louis van Gaal has had a good amount of time to look at their situation, they've spent a lot of money and the start they've made, although it hasn't been spectacular, suggests there is enough there to have a real go at it.

"But, make no mistake, Martial's introduction has been key. The pace, athleticism and skill he possesses, along with the goals he's scored, is incredible. He's been the catalyst behind United doing well, more than anything else."

United play Manuel Pellegrini's men in the Manchester derby on Sunday.
