Former goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar suggests that he is open to a return to Manchester United in the role of director of football.

Edwin van der Sar has suggested that he is interested in returning to Manchester United in the future.

Given their recent struggles on the pitch, there has been speculation regarding a director of football being appointed at Old Trafford.

Van der Sar, who is the chief executive officer at Ajax, has been linked with the role in the past, only to play down the possibility of a reunion with the Premier League giants.

However, the former goalkeeper has performed something of a U-turn by claiming that he would be 'interested' if any offer came his way.

The Dutchman told Planet Futbol: "Besides my family, my wife and kids and everything I have two loves in my life. That's Ajax, who gave me the opportunity to develop, they scouted me, they gave me the chance to shine in the world of football.

"And the last club of my career, also gave me a lot of attention, recognition and everything, developed at a later stage. And of course I'd be interested, interested in a position.

"But I need to learn a little more here [at Ajax], develop myself further and of course eventually let's see what the future brings. United is a fantastic club, there's a great following all over the world. Everybody wants to play for them and eventually, work for them."

Between 2005 and 2011, Van der Sar made a total of 264 appearances for United in all competitions.
