How Manchester United could line up against Newcastle United

Sports Mole looks at how Manchester United could line up for their return to Premier League action against Newcastle United at St James' Park.

Manchester United return to Premier League action for the first time since suffering their joint-heaviest defeat in the competition when they take on Newcastle United at St James' Park on Saturday.

The Red Devils have had two weeks to mull over their 6-1 hammering at home to Tottenham Hotspur, leaving them just two places above the relegation zone with three points from as many games so far this season.

Plenty has happened since then, including a deadline-day triple signing, but Man United will still be keen to exorcise their demons on the pitch as they face a Newcastle side with seven points from their opening four games.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could set his side up for the contest.

All three of Man United's deadline-day signings may have to wait for their full debuts - just as fellow summer arrival Donny van de Beek has had to.

Edinson Cavani is self-isolating following his arrival in the country and will therefore only be available to make his Man United bow against former club Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League next week.

Anthony Martial is also suspended following his red card against Spurs, leaving Solskjaer to choose between Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford and Odion Ighalo - the latter of whom could finally make his first Premier League start for the club - to lead the line.

Bruno Fernandes has been cleared to play following reports from Portugal that he may be forced to self-isolate as a result of international teammate Cristiano Ronaldo's positive coronavirus test.

Harry Maguire endured an international break to forget for other reasons, picking up an early red card in England's Nations League defeat to Denmark on Wednesday to add yet more scrutiny to a difficult time in his life.

It has been suggested that the Man United skipper would benefit from a spell away from the spotlight, and Solskjaer appeared to open the door to that possibility by revealing that Maguire picked up a knock before his sending-off.

However, Man United's limited centre-back options may not give him that luxury, with Eric Bailly next in the pecking order should Maguire miss out.

Luke Shaw may also start in the back four once again with Alex Telles having only had a matter of days with his new teammates.

Elsewhere, the likes of David de Gea, Paul Pogba and Aaron Wan-Bissaka may have seen their places in the team saved by the two-week international break following the humiliation at home to Spurs last time out.
