Report: Manchester United to start Wayne Rooney talks

Manchester United will focus on Wayne Rooney's contract situation once they have signed Juan Mata, according to a report.

Manchester United will reportedly open contract talks with Wayne Rooney once they have completed the signing of Juan Mata.

Reports on Wednesday claimed that United's bid of around £37m for Mata has been accepted by their Premier League rivals Chelsea, and that the midfielder will sign a four-and-a-half-year contract on Thursday after undergoing a medical.

The Mirror now reports that once United have tied up Mata, they will focus on keeping Rooney beyond the end of the season.

The England international striker has been linked with a summer move to Chelsea, but the Old Trafford hierarchy will start discussions over a new deal in the coming days.

Rooney's current contract with United runs out in June 2015.
