Pierre van Hooijdonk: 'Robin van Persie should quit Manchester United'

Pierre van Hooijdonk urges fellow Dutchman Robin van Persie to quit Manchester United.

Former Netherlands international Pierre van Hooijdonk has encouraged Robin van Persie to leave Manchester United this summer.

On Wednesday, Turkish outfit Besiktas confirmed an interest in bringing the 31-year-old to Istanbul following a testing season with the Red Devils last term.

He struggled for game time toward the end of the 2014-15 campaign and last week the Dutchman hinted that staying at Old Trafford could jeopardise his hopes of reaching Euro 2016.

"Of course the money is good, life is good in Istanbul, but it is not a big football league in Europe we are talking about," Van Hooijdonk, a former Fenerbahce striker, told the Daily Mail.

"There is a lot at stake right now for Robin. He could be heading for his last Euro tournament in France next summer. So he needs to play a lot in the 10 months before the Euros.

"I would advise Robin to leave United this summer. All the signals are there that the club wants to sell him. So he has to get out on time."

Van Persie, a Premier League Golden Boot winner in 2012 and 2013, netted 10 times in 29 appearances last time around.
