Result: Newcastle 2-1 Everton

Newcastle beat Everton 2-1 at St James' Park to move to second in the league.

Newcastle temporarily moved up to second place in the Premier League table with a 2-1 win over Everton at St James' Park.

Newcastle started the better of the two sides and took the lead after twelve minutes when Johnny Heitinga turned Danny Simpson's cross into his own goal.

Everton had chances to level but Newcastle were 2-0 up on 29 minutes when Ryan Taylor unleashed a shot from 22 yards that went in off the underside of the bar.

Louis Saha hit the post for Everton before Jack Rodwell looked to have got them back into the match with a header from a Royston Drenthe corner on the stroke of half-time.

Chances were few and far between in the second half as Newcastle held on.

The win was marred by several injuries as Newcastle's Yohann Cabaye and debutant Sylvain Marveaux limped off, as did Everton's Phil Neville.
