The 21-year-old, who began the game in place of Darren Bent, collected Brett Holman's clever square pass before beating John Ruddy with a clinical finish on 26 minutes.

At the other end moments earlier, Wes Hoolahan was denied from six yards by the outstretched leg of Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

The hosts came close to doubling their lead seven minutes before the interval, but Benteke's left-footed effort from close range was deflected wide.
