Ronald Koeman: 'Sam Gallagher nearing return'

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman reveals that striker Sam Gallagher is close to a first-team return following a serious knee injury.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has revealed that striker Sam Gallagher is nearing a first-team return following a serious knee injury.

The 19-year-old made his first appearance of the season on Monday for the club's Under-21s.

Koeman is confident that the youngster, who scored two goals in 20 games last term, will be back in contention for the senior side "in the next few weeks".

"He's a young player. He had some problems with some injuries. I hope he will be back in the next few weeks," the Dutchman told Southampton's official website.

"He will have a good physical programme. He will play in the Under-21s and that's good news. We spoke to Sam and we said the best thing is to start with the Under-21s. After a long period out that is the best step up and then when he is ready he will come back into the first team."

Southampton continue their Premier League campaign on Saturday when they travel to Queens Park Rangers.
