Jose Fonte "over the moon" with Portugal call-up

Southampton defender Jose Fonte admits that he is "over the moon" to have been called up to the Portugal national team for the first time in his career.

Jose Fonte has admitted that he is "over the moon" to have been included in the Portugal squad for their upcoming matches against France and Denmark.

The Southampton defender learned this week that he had been called up by new Portugal coach Fernando Santos for the first time in his career.

The 30-year-old told Sky Sports News: "On Tuesday, the gaffer told me I was on the pre-list of 40 players, which was a first time anyway because before I had never been on those lists. That was the first moment I got a little bit excited.

"On Friday when we were training, the gaffer came up to me and said 'congratulations, by the way' and then I knew I was in the squad.

"I am over the moon, obviously, but we have a game on Sunday and I need to focus on that now. I'm already focused. I'm 30 years old now and I know I have a job to do Sunday. That's the most important thing now and the game we need to be focused on."

Southampton face Tottenham Hotspur tomorrow.
