Southampton and Huddersfield Town play out a 1-1 draw in Saturday's Premier League meeting at St Mary's Stadium.

Southampton and Huddersfield Town have played out a 1-1 draw in Saturday's Premier League meeting at St Mary's Stadium.

The visitors were quick out of the starting blocks on the south coast as Aaron Mooy saw an early effort charged down by Steven Davis.

David Wagner's men went even closer on the quarter-hour mark as Fraser Forster superbly tipped Christopher Schindler's header onto the crossbar.

The hosts went on to take the lead on 24 minutes when James Ward-Prowse's corner was nodded on by Wesley Hoedt into the path of the unmarked Charlie Austin, who slotted home from point-blank range.

Schindler headed wide from another pinpoint Florent Hadergjonaj cross before Austin drew ire from the away camp with a late challenge on goalkeeper Jonas Lossl, referee Lee Probert taking no action.

Saints spurned a number of chances and would go on to rue their missed opportunities as Huddersfield drew level in the 64th minute, Tommy Smith's cross from the right flank being nodded into the net by Laurent Depoitre.

Mauricio Pellegrino's side came agonisingly close to finding a late winner when Maya Yoshida's header struck the base of the right-hand post, bounced off Lossl and was subsequently hacked away as the final whistle brought about a share of the spoils.

Southampton (4-5-1): Forster; Stephens, Yoshida, Hoedt, Targett; Ward-Prowse, Davis (Hojbjerg 72'), Tadic (Boufal 72'), Lemina; Redmond; Austin (Gabbiadini 79').

Huddersfield Town (4-5-1): Lossl; Hadergjonaj (Smith 61'), Jorgensen, Schindler, Malone; Quaner, Mooy, Ince, Williams, van La Parra (Lolley 61'); Depoitre (Mounie 82').
