Tottenham Hotspur head coach Mauricio Pochettino says that midfielder Harry Winks must "keep his feet on the grass" after praise regarding his recent performances.

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Mauricio Pochettino has encouraged Harry Winks to "keep his feet on the grass" after impressing for club and country in recent weeks.

Winks has established himself as a key man in the centre of Spurs' midfield, while the 21-year-old was handed his England debut against Lithuania last month.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate has publicly praised Winks, but Pochettino wants his player to continue to look for ways to improve his game.

The 45-year-old told reporters: "It's up to him now to keep his feet on the grass, his mentality is so important, to try to be better is so important. We try to translate here at Spurs to different players that in football it is never enough. Even at 40, like Buffon, it's never enough. You can do better and must try to be better.

"If we're able to keep that mentality in the young players to settle in the team, anything is possible. For me, for now, it's about keeping feet on the grass, to say 'okay I've reached that level but try to be better.

"Characteristics and potential is massive, as a player for the Under-23s or against Real Madrid, always his mentality is to win and perform as well. That is so important to keep that feeling in his career."

Winks is a likely starter when Spurs host Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
