Steve Bruce believes that Connor Wickham "will play a big part" for Sunderland this season.
The 18-year-old joined the Black Cats during the summer from Championship side Ipswich Town.
However, he has found starting opportunities at the Stadium of Light hard to come by and Bruce has revealed that the young striker is keen to gain more minutes on the pitch.
"Connor has knocked on the door asking what he has to do to get a chance," said the manager. "He hasn't exactly said 'play me' but he wanted to know what was required from him.
"He's disappointed not to have been picked before now and is itching for that chance.
"He is a hugely talented lad and he will play a big part in our season, without question."
Wickham has yet to open his goalscoring account for his new club.
