Roberto Martinez backs Swansea City to survive

Former Swansea City manager Roberto Martinez hopes that his old club can survive, but does not plan to help them do so on Saturday.

Current Everton and former Swansea City manager Roberto Martinez has backed his old side for Premier League survival despite their precarious position just four points above the relegation zone.

Martinez said that he hopes Swansea are able to stay up, but would not be doing them any favours on Saturday when the two sides meet at Goodison Park.

"Clearly this weekend it is a vital game for us in the same way it is for them so you can imagine all those thoughts will be left until after the game," Sky Sports News quotes Martinez as saying.

"I want Swansea to do well. This season their efforts in the Europa League have affected their league points tally but that is absolutely normal and they will be fine at the end of the season.

"The club's philosophy will give them success and they have strong players who have the mentality to get them the results they need."

A win for Everton would see them move into fifth in the Premier League.
