Wolfsburg thrash Mainz 05 in 3-0 victory

Goals from Ricardo Rodriguez, Bas Dost and Luis Gustavo give Wolfsburg a comfortable 3-0 victory over Mainz 05 in the Bundesliga.

Wolfsburg have thrashed Mainz 05 3-0 in the Bundesliga this afternoon, thanks to second-half goals from Ricardo Rodriguez, Bas Dost and Luis Gustavo.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting threatened for Mainz early on after he was found by a pass from Johannes Geis, but his effort on goal was blocked.

Shinji Okazaki was next to have a go for the visitors as he saw his shot saved at the bottom corner of the goal following a through-ball from Koo Ja-Cheol.

Ivan Perisic almost put the hosts into the lead midway through the first half when he let go with a stinging effort from distance, which was somehow kept out by the Mainz goalkeeper.

Stefan Bell conceded a penalty in the second half, allowing Rodriguez to step up and slot home in the 59th minute to give Wolfsburg the lead.

The hosts never looked back from that point onwards, as Dost finished neatly into the bottom corner after latching onto a pass from Ivica Olic.

Gustavo cemented the victory in the 75th minute when he got onto the end of a corner from Robin Knoche to head the ball home and hand Wolfsburg all three points.
