Paul O'Connell "very much surprised" by Ireland result

Ireland captain Paul O'Connell admits that he was surprised by the team's 26-3 thrashing of Wales in the Six Nations.

Paul O'Connell has admitted that he was "very much surprised" by Ireland's comfortable win over Wales in the Six Nations this afternoon.

The championship leaders defeated the defending champions 26-3, with Chris Henry and Paddy Jackson both scoring tries.

The Irish captain told BBC Sport: "Very much surprised. I think we did really well in the first half, our discipline was excellent and Jonathan Sexton's kicking was excellent.

"In conditions like this when you get a small bit of a lead and the other team has to play it becomes tough for them. I'm really surprised by the result in the magnitude of the scoreline but it's great for us."

Ireland face England at Twickenham in two weeks' time in their next game.
