Dan Biggar looped over an early drop-goal for the visitors, but that would be the only time that they led the match.

Soon after, the home side scored the first of their five tries when Bryan Habana ran onto Willie le Roux's kick and touched down.

Duane Vermeulen bulldozed his way through the Welsh backline for a second try minutes later before Habana went over for his second try straight after a second Biggar drop-goal.

Le Roux scored the Springboks' fourth try before half time by collecting his own kick to hand the hosts a 28-9 half-time lead.

Cornal Hendricks scored a try on his debut as South Africa eased to victory in the second half, with Alex Cuthbert notching Wales' only try 12 minutes from time.

The second Test takes place in Nelspruit next Saturday.
