Live Commentary: US Open - day four as it happened

Sports Mole brings you live text commentary from day four of the US Open at Flushing Meadows, New York.

Good afternoon and welcome to Sports Mole's live text commentary from day four of the US Open at Flushing Meadows, New York.

The big story yesterday was Laura Robson's surprise victory over the retiring Kim Clijsters, while it was a good day for the Brits elsewhere as Andy Murray saw off Ivan Dodig to book his place in the third round.

There are a number of second and third-round matches in the Big Apple today featuring the likes of Roger Federer, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Serena Williams and Agnieszka Radwanska.

Please note that play is due to start at 4pm.

5.27amThe action gets underway from 4pm - don't be late! Until then.

5.26amThis is also the end of my stint providing commentary on the tournament. Thanks for logging on for the past four days and please come back tomorrow for all the action from day five.

5.23amSo day four at Flushing Meadows comes to a close with a tinge of disappointment for the home crowd.

5.22amVenus Williams's US Open challenge comes to an end at the hands of Angelique Kerber. However, it was far from an angelic match. Unforced errors aplenty.

5.21amGAME, SET AND MATCH! Williams 2-6 7-5 5-7 Kerber

Williams 2-6 7-5 5-6* KerberFantastic forehand down the line from Kerber. Match point.

Williams 2-6 7-5 *5-5 KerberNow, now. Two break points for the German.

Williams 2-6 7-5 *5-5 KerberPoor volley from Venus. She showed absolutely no conviction with that and carves it into the net. 15-30.

Williams 2-6 7-5 *5-5 KerberDespite picking her game up, she is still not able to eradicate the double faults. 15-15.

Williams 2-6 7-5 *5-5 KerberVenus blasts an overhead smash. 15-0.

Williams 2-6 7-5 5-4* KerberVenus comes to the net again, taking pace off the ball with the volley. 30-30.

Williams 2-6 7-5 5-4* KerberWow. Big, deep forehand from Venus finds the corner of the box. 15-15.

Williams 2-6 7-5 *4-4 KerberBreak point Kerber.

Williams 2-6 7-5 *4-4 KerberDouble fault. 30-15.

Williams 2-6 7-5 *4-4 KerberKerber holds. And I miss watching Federer. It feels like forever ago.

Williams 2-6 7-5 4-3* KerberKerber's dragged it back to 30-30.

Williams 2-6 7-5 4-3* KerberVenus goes long and we're back on serve.

Williams 2-6 7-5 *4-2 KerberBrilliant point. Kerber took control and came to the net. Venus couldn't pass her and the German has the chance to break back.

Williams 2-6 7-5 *4-2 KerberThe German is starting to cut a dejected figure. She had it all but sewn up in the second set.

Williams 2-6 7-5 *4-2 KerberKerber tries, and fails, with a drop shot. 15-15.

Williams 2-6 7-5 *4-2 KerberVenus goes after the second serve and thumps it heartily. She breaks and is now in the box seat.

Williams 2-6 7-5 3-2* KerberAnd then bangs one wide. 15-30.

Williams 2-6 7-5 3-2* KerberKerber powers one in on the baseline. 15-15.

Williams 2-6 7-5 *2-2 KerberKerber threw in a couple of strange shots there. Lobs from the baseline out of nowhere. She nearly fooled Venus on the first one but the second was dispatched with gusto.

Williams 2-6 7-5 *2-2 KerberBig, big hitting from Venus. Advantage.

Williams 2-6 7-5 *2-2 KerberVenus is pulling it out when she needs to. Once again she attacks the net and smashes a volley.

Williams 2-6 7-5 *2-2 KerberA 13th double fault gives Kerber a break point.

Williams 2-6 7-5 *2-2 KerberVenus went for it. She came forward and dispatched a backhand volley. 15-30.

Williams 2-6 7-5 *2-2 KerberThere's trouble brewing on Venus's serve. 0-30.

Williams 2-6 7-5 *2-2 KerberA routine hold for Kerber.

4.38amI've a feeling that Olga Govortsova, Johanna Konta's conqueror - or Konta-ror if you will - will be licking her lips at the prospect of playing either of these two ladies. Although I can't envisige them playing this badly... ever again.

Williams 2-6 7-5 2-1* KerberVenus holds. The players have now been on court over two hours.

Williams 2-6 7-5 *1-1 KerberThis would be one hell of match if there was not net involved. 15-30.

Williams 2-6 7-5 1-0* KerberKerber has definitely dropped her levels in the last 20 minutes or so. She wasn't playing that great before that, really. That has coincided with Venus getting slightly better.

Williams 2-6 7-5 1-0* KerberVenus holds serve and now leads. How? I don't really know...

Williams 2-6 7-5 *0-0 KerberMonsterous forehand from Venus gets it to deuce.

Williams 2-6 7-5 *0-0 KerberDouble fault brings up break point in the first game of the deciding set. Start as you mean to go on, Venus...

Williams 2-6 6-5* KerberSaved! Kerber brings Venus to the net with a drop shot before clipping it past her into the open court.

Williams 2-6 6-5* KerberSet point Venus.

Williams 2-6 6-5* KerberNow it's Kerber's turn to misfire with the forehand. Deuce.

Williams 2-6 6-5* KerberVenus sees a forehand go long. 40-30.

Williams 2-6 6-5* KerberDouble fault. 15-30.

Williams 2-6 6-5* Kerber0-15 and Kerber looks frustrated with herself. And well she might.

Williams 2-6 6-5* KerberVenus holds. Kerber will now serve to take the second set into a tie break.

Williams 2-6 *5-5 KerberVenus maybe senses blood now and throws everything into a forehand. 30-15.

Williams 2-6 *5-5 KerberWe're back on serve!

Williams 2-6 4-5* KerberAdvantage Venus.

Williams 2-6 4-5* KerberA rollercoaster point ends with KErber finding the net and Venus coming out on top. 15-30.

Williams 2-6 4-5* KerberThe net - sorry Kerber - breaks for a seventh time. She will now serve for the match. Easier said than done, it would seem.

Williams 2-6 *4-4 KerberVenus goes long and it's another break point for the German.

Williams 2-6 *4-4 KerberGuess what? Double fault. Break point.

Williams 2-6 *4-4 KerberVenus meets her old friend the net. Break point.

Williams 2-6 *4-4 KerberVenus saves a break point.

Williams 2-6 *4-4 KerberThere are forlorn expressions all around Venus's box. Mother Williams is wearing shades and could well be asleep.

Williams 2-6 *4-4 KerberKerber fires long and we're back on serve!

Williams 2-6 3-4* KerberFirst one saved.

Williams 2-6 3-4* KerberKerber's forehand sails just wide of the target, giving Venus two break points. It's the start of the first set all over again.

Williams 2-6 3-4* KerberKerber takes a leaf out of venus's book and double faults. 15-15.

Williams 2-6 3-4* KerberKerber breaks. Venus left the door wide open for the German then and she duly obliged by putting away the approach shot. Venus dollied it up with a tame volley.

Williams 2-6 *3-3 KerberTwo break points. The first is saved.

Williams 2-6 *3-3 KerberBut follows with her eighth double fault.

Williams 2-6 *3-3 KerberVenus stretched every last sinue in that point, thumping a number of big forehands. 15-15.

Williams 2-6 3-2* KerberGreat twisting two-handed forehand from Kerber has Venus scrambling. 40-15.

Williams 2-6 3-2* KerberVenus drops one on the baseline. Kerber's challenge fails. 15-15.

Williams 2-6 3-2* KerberKerber drops one short and Venus puts it away nicely.

3.38amKerber is getting her heel/ankle re-taped.

Williams 2-6 *2-2 KerberVenus challenges a call on first serve and it's successful. Has the tide turned?

Williams 2-6 *2-2 KerberNo mistake at the net this time by Venus. Although she needs two bites at the cherry to put away the smash. It looks as though Kerber has asked for the trainer.

Williams 2-6 *2-2 KerberA backhand down the line seals the break for Venus!

Williams 2-6 1-2* KerberDrop shot from Kerber brings Venus into the net. The American fails to put away the volley and powers a smash into the net. Calamity.

Williams 2-6 1-2* KerberVenus holding serve has knocked the stuffing out of Kerber... she now faces two break points.

Williams 2-6 1-2* KerberVENUS HOLDS! Still, it was on a second serve. It is getting beyond parody now.

Williams 2-6 *0-2 KerberAdvantage Venus.

Williams 2-6 *0-2 KerberVenus's first-serve percentage is not going to make for an entertaining read. I bet she'll be horrified. Deuce.

Williams 2-6 *0-2 KerberAdvantage Venus.

Williams 2-6 *0-2 KerberHer reversed forehand is about the only thing that has worked for Venus tonight. Deuce.

Williams 2-6 *0-2 KerberThe net is going to start pressing charges against Venus. Break point.

Williams 2-6 *0-2 KerberA big serve saves that one.

Williams 2-6 *0-2 KerberWell... Venus has just thumped an overhead smash way wide. There's not much to be said for that.

Williams 2-6 *0-2 KerberFollowed by her second favourite error, the double fault. 30-30.

Williams 2-6 *0-2 KerberAnother overhit forehand from Venus. 30-15.

Williams 2-6 0-1* KerberAnother stray shot from Venus. 20 unforced errors tells its own story.

Williams 2-6 0-1* KerberDouble from from Kerber this time gives Venus a break point.

Williams 2-6 0-1* KerberVenus has just hit possibly the widest backhand I have ever seen. It wasn't even close, especially from her position on the court.

Williams 2-6 0-1* KerberVenus hits a good backhand down the line that wrong-foots Kerber.

Williams 2-6 0-1* KerberKerber breaks and the signs look ominous for Venus.

Williams 2-6 *0-0 KerberVenus misfires once more and it's 0-30.

3.05amSET! Williams 2-6 Kerber

Williams 2-5* KerberGreat point! Venus was dragging Kerber all over the place there but hits a volley into the net. Set point.

Williams 2-5* KerberVenus attacks the net and puts away a forehand. 30-30.

Williams 2-5* KerberVenus flashes another forehand past Kerber, but still trails 30-15 in this game.

Williams 2-5* KerberDouble fault. Broken for a fourth game. Six points on her own serve. Poor stuff from a great champion.

Williams *2-4 KerberTwo break points for Kerber.

Williams *2-4 KerberTerrific inside-out forehand from Venus. 15-30.

Williams *2-4 KerberVenus leaves a deep ball which drops on the line. You get the feeling that this just isn't going to be her night.

Williams *2-4 KerberDouble fault. This has been truly sloppy tennis so far - from both women. Venus just a little more...

Williams *2-4 KerberHOLD! Okay, I'll stop being sarcastic now. But once again, the net cord came into play there, helping Kerber once more.

Williams 2-3* KerberDouble fault as Kerber feels the pressure of holding serve.

Williams 2-3* KerberThe German has two hold points now.

Williams 2-3* KerberKerber is at 30-15! A hold of serve coming up?!

Williams 2-3* KerberKerber hits a forehand and Venus doesn't seem to chase it. It wasn't out her reach, by any means.

Williams 2-3* KerberKerber breaks. Well, Venus hands it to her. If they don't hit it into the net or out, they're hitting the net cord. Loosen up, ladies...

Williams *2-2 KerberVenus can't buy a first serve at the moment. However, a booming forehand saves one break point.

Williams *2-2 KerberA third double fault gives Kerber three break points. Does no-one want to hold their serve?

Williams *2-2 KerberBoth women are racking up the unforced errors. 0-30.

Williams *2-2 KerberVenus breaks back and we're yet to see a hold of serve.

Williams 1-2* KerberKerber fires long and will now face a triple break point herself.

Williams 1-2* KerberKerber once again finds the net. 0-30. Another break?

Williams 0-1* KerberVenus comes into the net, but her volley isn't good enough. 30-15.

Williams 0-1* KerberKerber fires out, but Venus double faults on the next point to hand the German the break.

Williams *0-0 KerberTwo break points for the German.

Williams *0-0 KerberBrilliant cross-court backhand from Williams. 15-30.

Williams *0-0 KerberKerber is already on the front foot. 0-30.

Williams *0-0 KerberShe puts an easy forehand into the net. Shaking the cobwebs off.

Williams *0-0 KerberVenus to serve first.

2.22amLittle sis has already booked her place with a victory over Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez

2.16amSo next up tonight is Venus Williams vs. Angelique Kerber. It has all the ingredients for a classic encounter.

2.12amFederer: "He got the last laugh - he beat me in Miami this year!"

2.11amFederer (on Roddick): "Oh man, he's a great man. I've had some great battles with him. I've known him a long, long time. The Wimbledon finals come to mind when we've played each other, but he was a great, great competitor and a great champion."

2.08amFederer: "That last shot [from Phau] was ridiculous" - see, I told you! Even the great man himself thinks so!

2.08amFederer: "It was a great match for me. Bjorn played well, he did some incredible shot-making."

Federer 6-2 6-3 *2-1 PhauPhau holds his serve with an acute mid-court backhand.

Federer 6-2 6-3 2-0* PhauThe American commentators are clearly having a giggle with Roger Federer's dad, as they keep panning to him in the box. A proud man, he must be. His son holds his serve.

12.09amBut the show must go on. And with that, Sam Querrey has beaten Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo in straight sets to book his place in the next round. So cheer up America!

12.05amFirstly, I'd just like to say that, on a personal level, I'm sad to see Andy Roddick retiring. The time is probably right, but he has been great for the sport. He has stepped slightly over the mark sometimes, but he plays with passion and you expect that sort of thing from anyone of his ilk.

12.05amThank you Jack. It's been a blast.

12.01amAnyway, that's enough rabbitting on from me for tonight. I'll hand you over to the ever-funny Michael Penkman who will take you through the rest of the evening's play.

11.57pmGAME, SET AND MATCH! Berdych 6-1 6-4 6-2 Zopp

Berdych 6-1 6-4 *5-2 ZoppZopp gives himself the teeniest tiniest bit of hope with a hold but Berdych will now serve for the match. I'm just trying to be optimistic on the Estonian's behalf.

Berdych 6-1 6-4 5-1* ZoppJust as I was getting that information down Berdych held without hardly breaking a set. He's just a game away from the next round now.

11.50pmSET! Granollers 1-6 Blake

11.49pmSET! Wang 4-6 6-4 Simon

Berdych 6-1 6-4 *4-1 ZoppGood on Zopp for holding.

Berdych 6-1 6-4 4-0* ZoppWorld number 80 Zopp showed some fight there but Berdych quickly snuffs out the danger to hold.

11.41pmSET! Ramos-Vinolas 6-7[4] 7-5 6-7[5] Verdasco

Berdych 6-1 6-4 *3-0 ZoppZopp whacks a forehand long and Berdych has another break. He paces back to his chair with the look of a man who has plans elsewhere this evening.

11.38pmBritain's Johanna Konta has got off to a cracking start in her match against Olga Govortsova as she takes the opening set 6-2.

Almagro 6-3 5-7 5-7 6-4 3-3* PetzschnerAlmagro fights back this time to hold. Both men seem to be at a bit of a deadlock at the moment and it looks like it'll be a mistake rather than some inspiration that will settle this one.

7.13pmSET! Cilic 6-3 Brands

Petzschner rather amusingly hit home a winning volley before sitting down in his chair all in one movement. The crowd seem to be on his side now.

Almagro 6-3 5-7 5-7 6-4 1-1* PetzschnerHow frustrating is that for Almagro? Just as he looked to have taken control of the match Petzschner breaks back instantly. One can only imagine what's going through the Spaniard's mind. Something angry, no doubt.

6.51pmElena Vesnina has just started her second-round tie with Ekaterina Makarova.

6.44pmWe will have our fifth set. Almagro seals the set with an audacious smash at the net that sees Petzschner stray almost into the crowd to retrieve...but he can't get near it. 6.42pmSET! Almagro 6-3 5-7 5-7 6-4 Petzschner

6.35pmIn the women's doubles top seeds Lisa Raymond and Liezel Huber avoid a shock by beating Eleni Daniilidou and Casey DellAcqua in three sets. They were 1-4 down in the third but managed to come back and advance to the next round.

Almagro 6-3 5-7 5-7 *4-3 PetzschnerThat was a gruelling game but Petzschner saves a couple of break points to hold. Almagro again not looking to pleased with himself. I wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of him. He looks like he might bite you.

6.31pmThe second round matches featuring Flavio Cipolla vs. Jack Sock and Marin Cilic vs. Daniel Brands are now up and running. Updates as and when they happen.

5.55pmAlmagro serving to stay in this third set...

Almagro 6-3 5-7 *4-5 PetzschnerThe Spaniard looked to be losing his cool again there as Petzschner holds. Pretty sure he barked at the umpire over one call that didn't go his way.

Almagro 6-3 5-7 4-4* PetzschnerWonderful from Almagro. The cheekiest of sliced drop shots sees him hold to make it 4-4.
