Lightning halts Tom Daley at World Cup

Lightning strikes interrupt proceedings at the Diving World Cup in Rio de Janeiro.

Lightning strikes in Rio de Janeiro have halted the men's 10m synchro event at the Diving World Cup in Rio de Janeiro.

Heavy downpour and thunderstorms have brought a delay to proceedings at the partially-exposed Maria Lenk Aquatics Stadium, which will be used at this summer's Olympic Games.

Spectators were forced indoors as rain poured into the stadium, with conditions deemed unsafe for divers to continue with the event.

By the time of the interruption, GB diver Tom Daley and partner Daniel Goodfellow were in fourth place on the leaderboard, just three-tenths of a point behind third-placed David Boudia and Steele Johnson of the USA.

Chinese pairing Chen Aisen and Lin Yue are currently in first place, with Sascha Klein and Patrick Hausding of Germany in pursuit nine points back.

Four full rounds had been completed by the time of the lightning strikes, leaving each pair with two more dives to perform when the competition resumes.
