Arsene Wenger: 'Contract talks between club and player should be discreet'

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says that transfer talks need to be dealt with with "discretion".

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that he believes contract talks should remain 'discreet' as it is the most appropriate conduct.

The Frenchman offered his opinion when asked about the current saga involving Raheem Sterling at Liverpool.

The England international recently admitted in an interview that he has rejected a £100,000-a-week deal at Anfield, and his agent Aidy Ward has caused waves with his alleged claims.

A meeting was due to be held on Friday, but Liverpool have cancelled talks with Sterling, who has been linked with a summer move to Arsenal.

"I don't want to single out people but discretion is the best way to deal with things as once it is in public it is very difficult to
master," Wenger said in this morning's press conference. "For us it is always adding difficulties once it is public.

"I am not sure it is the player causing the problem. [The player and agent] come as a package, that's true, but the problems don't always come from the player - sometimes the package.

"The agents are linked with the media very time and when it is their interest to put a story public they do but always the best deals we have done are when it is quiet, calm and secret."

Manchester City, Manchester United and Bayern Munich have also been linked with Sterling.
