Arsenal are reportedly close to wrapping up a deal for banned Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana, who could be signed for just £1.7m if his doping suspension is upheld.

Arsenal are reportedly close to completing the signing of Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Having seen Mathew Ryan return to Brighton & Hove Albion, Mikel Arteta is thought to want a new shot-stopper ahead of the 2021-22 campaign, especially with Alex Runarsson struggling to impress.

Brentford's David Raya was previously linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium, but the Bees' promotion to the Premier League has forced the Gunners to look elsewhere.

According to Dutch outlet NOS, Arsenal hope to wrap up a deal for Onana within the next few days, and the goalkeeper's doping ban could see them strike a cut-price deal.

The Cameroon international tested positive for Furosemide - a banned substance - last year and is currently serving a suspension from all football until February 2022, but an appeal over his ban has been lodged and the Court of Arbitration for Sport will determine an outcome this week.

The report adds that Onana could cost the Gunners up to £7.75m if his ban is overturned or shortened, but a marginal fee of £1.7m will seal the deal if the appeal is unsuccessful.

The 25-year-old has kept 83 clean sheets in 204 appearances for Ajax and played a key role in their run to the Champions League semi-finals in 2019, but his deal with the Eredivisie champions expires in 12 months' time.
