Paul Gascoigne: 'Raheem Sterling should use boos to his advantage'

Former England player Paul Gascoigne says that Liverpool's Raheem Sterling should use criticism from fans to his advantage.

Former England international Paul Gascoigne has said that Raheem Sterling should use criticism from fans to his advantage.

The 20-year-old was booed during England's 0-0 draw against Republic of Ireland and was substituted after 66 minutes.

England manager Roy Hodgson then said that the forward should "get a thicker skin" in order to cope with international football.

"My advice to Sterling is to take that as a compliment," Gascoigne told Sky Sports News.

"Because he's talking to you and not the other players and that means he cares about you.

"The boon side of it [the booing] is enjoy it. I always say it might take 40,000 people to upset one guy but one guy can upset 40,000 by sticking the ball in the back of the net."

Sterling has been heavily criticised after rejecting a £100k per week contract at Liverpool, and has been linked with a move to rivals Manchester United.
