Garry Monk: 'Bafetimbi Gomis not replacement for Wilfried Bony'

Garry Monk says that he wants Wilfried Bony to remain at Swansea City where he can thrive alongside summer signing Bafetimbi Gomis.

Swansea City manager Garry Monk has denied speculation that striker Bafetimbi Gomis was signed to replace Wilfried Bony.

The 29-year-old arrived at the Liberty Stadium from Lyon on a four-year deal earlier this summer, while Bony has been linked with a move to both Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool in recent times.

However, Monk believes that the duo can work together well at the Swans after seeing Gomis bag his first goal for the club in last night's 1-0 victory over Rotherham United.

"It's definitely not the case that he's his replacement," BT Sport quotes the Swansea boss as saying. "I don't think it's about pressure on Bony.

"Through the season we'll see different things: they'll play as lone strikers, they'll play as a pair, use them in different ways. It's not a competition between them but obviously we want them all to push each other and every striker will want to be top scorer.

"But it's about them working together which they've done very well in pre-season and been great with each other on the training field."

Bony scored 25 goals for the Welsh outfit in all competitions last season.
