Widnes Vikings close in on a move for Charly Runciman after St George Illawarra agree to release the versatile back from his contract.

Widnes Vikings have edged closer to signing Charly Runciman after St George Illawarra agreed to release the versatile back from his contract.

The 21-year-old Australian has been heavily linked with a move to the Super League club.

Runciman has made 12 first-team appearances for the Dragons over the past two years.

"I have had a couple of great seasons with the Dragons and will look back on my time here with fond memories," he is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News.

"The opportunity however to play regular first-grade football with the Vikings was appealing to me and something that will help me progress as a player."

Widnes are back in Super League action on Sunday when they host Salford Red Devils.
