Arsenal general secretary David Miles says that the club "thought it might happen" after they were drawn against Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Arsenal general secretary David Miles has admitted that the club are not surprised that they have drawn Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Arsene Wenger's men were in a position to seal a more favourable tie after finishing top of their group, but as fate would have it, they were drawn against the five-time European champions.

Arsenal were knocked out by Bayern at this stage of the competition in the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons, and the clubs also faced one another in the group stages last season.

"We thought it might happen, we've played them five or six times in the last [six] years," Miles told BT Sport. "We've now qualified for the knockout stage for the 14th successive season, that's testament to Arsene and the squad over that period.

"The fans will think we've got the rough end of the draw again but at some stage the tide's got to turn so why not this time?"

Arsenal will be at home for the second leg, which will be played in March.
