How Arsenal could line up against Liverpool

Sports Mole looks at how Arsenal could line up for Saturday's visit of Liverpool as the Gunners contend with a defensive injury crisis.

Arsenal's unbeaten run will face its sternest test yet on Saturday when they welcome title hopefuls Liverpool to the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners were beaten by Manchester City and Chelsea in their opening two matches of the campaign, but they have since won 12 and lost none of their last 13 matches across all competitions.

Victory this weekend would see Arsenal move to within one point of the unbeaten Liverpool in the Premier League table, as well as sending out a statement that they could also push for a title challenge this season.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how the injury-hit hosts could line up for the top-four showdown.

Possible ARS XI vs. LIV

Out: Matteo Guendouzi (suspended), Mohamed Elneny (thigh), Laurent Koscielny (Achilles), Konstantinos Mavropanos (groin)
Doubtful: Hector Bellerin (thigh), Nacho Monreal (hamstring), Sead Kolasinac (hamstring)

Arsenal are facing something of a crisis at the back for the visit of Liverpool's dangerous front three, with as many as seven defensive players sidelined.

The Gunners' predicament was not helped by Matteo Guendouzi's red card against Blackpool in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, leaving the youngster suspended for a match he probably would have started given Arsenal's shortages elsewhere.

Granit Xhaka has been serving as a makeshift left-back in the absences of Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac and will continue that role should neither recover in time for this match.

Hector Bellerin joined the injury list after coming off at half time against Crystal Palace last weekend, meaning that Stephan Lichtsteiner should start having scored his goal for the club in midweek.

Guendouzi's absence is likely to mean a start for rumoured Liverpool target Aaron Ramsey alongside Lucas Torreira, while further forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang should start again having scored five goals in his last three Premier League games.

Alexandre Lacazette and Mesut Ozil were given the night off against Blackpool in midweek and so should be fresh for this game, while Alex Iwobi only put in a cameo performance and is once again expected to be chosen ahead of Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
