Arsenal were right to let Shkodran Mustafi join Schalke 04 on a free contract, according to former Gunners attacker Paul Merson.

Paul Merson has taken a swipe at Shkodran Mustafi following his exit from Arsenal, joking that the defender will fit in well at Bundesliga strugglers Schalke 04.

Mustafi mutually agreed to terminate his Arsenal contract on Monday ahead of signing a six-month deal with Schalke.

The Royal Blues are bottom of the German top flight with eight points from 19 matches and recently came within one game of equalling the league's longest ever winless run.

Asked if Arsenal were right to let Mustafi leave for nothing, Merson told Sky Sports News: "Yeah, and he'll keep that record going at Schalke!"

Mustafi, who joined the Gunners in a £35m deal from Valencia in 2016, had been restricted to just six starts in all competitions under Mikel Arteta in 2020-21, five of those in the Europa League.
