Burton Albion confirm Blackpool's Gary Rowett approach

Burton Albion confirm that manager Gary Rowett has turned down an approach from Blackpool to become the club's new boss.

Burton Albion have confirmed that manager Gary Rowett has been approached by Blackpool regarding the possibility of becoming the club's new manager.

Blackpool have lost all six of their competitive outings so far this season, and the relationship between manager Jose Riga and chairman Karl Oyston hit a new low this week after the Belgian returned to his homeland during the international break.

Oyston accused Riga of being unprofessional and, despite the manager still being in charge at Bloomfield Road, has set about looking for a replacement.

However, Rowett earlier revealed that he had turned the Tangerines down in order to remain at Burton, and the club confirmed the news on their official website.

"Following speculation in the media regarding the future of manager Gary Rowett, Burton Albion can confirm that Blackpool chairman Karl Oyston approached chairman Ben Robinson yesterday afternoon (Monday 8th September) for permission to speak to Gary Rowett about their managerial position," read a statement.

"Burton Albion gave Blackpool permission to speak to Gary following their approach and he met with Blackpool representatives today (Tuesday 9th September) to discuss the position.

"Following that meeting, Gary Rowett has confirmed to the club that he will not leave Burton Albion at this present time to join Blackpool."

Blackpool currently sit rock bottom of the Championship and are one of only two clubs in England's top four divisions yet to pick up a point this season.

Burton, meanwhile, are top of League Two having won five of their opening six matches.
