Mark Warburton: 'It has been a difficult day'

Brentford boss Mark Warburton admits that it has been a "difficult day" after a 2-1 defeat to Watford followed speculation about his future.

Brentford boss Mark Warburton has praised the attitude of his players despite the club slumping to a 2-1 defeat to Watford on an eventful day at Griffin Park.

Reports emerged on Tuesday morning that Warburton's role at the club was in jeopardy, despite him leading them into the top six of the Championship table.

The club soon issued a statement saying that Warburton would remain in charge but that they "plan for various possible eventualities", before the day ended in disappointing fashion as they fell to a last-minute loss to the Hornets.

The 52-year-old is quoted by BBC Sport as saying: "It's been a difficult day. I was woken up at 6am by the news. I was looking forward to a lie-in. But the players have been outstanding. They are a top group and I am thankful for their support.

"Nothing has changed. These players deserve my focus. They have given themselves a really good opportunity. We are still in the top six and it will be a travesty for them not to get something out of this season."

Watford's victory has seen them overtake Brentford in the league standings.
