Grant: ‘Villas-Boas could succeed at Chelsea’

Avram Grant pledges his support to new Blues manager Andre Villas-Boas.

Avram Grant has expressed confidence of Andre Villas Boas’ chances at Chelsea, but warned that he will be expected to deliver.

Villas-Boas became the youngest manager in the Premier League when he was appointed at Stamford Bridge yesterday. However, Grant doesn’t think that this will count against the former Porto boss.

"I know he's young but fellow coach Pep Guardiola was young when he started at Barcelona - and without much experience - and did a great job,” he told BBC Radio 5Live. “Experience is important but quality and authority is more important.

"Andre did a great job at Porto. The players liked him. Players are human beings. If [Chelsea] see he has the quality then they will support him."

Former Chelsea manager Grant, who was fired by owner Roman Abramovich when the club finished second in the Premier League under his leadership, stressed that Villas-Boas had to deliver what was asked of him if he wants to keep his position.

“Roman is a guy who says he wants results, and he gives you everything to achieve the results,” he said. “He wants it as quick as you can, because he has put a lot of money in.

“At the end of the day, football is a game of results, especially at Chelsea.”

Villas-Boas succeeds Carlo Ancelotti, who was fired for failing to retain the league title following the previous season’s league and cup double.
