Newcastle United score twice in second half to defeat Chelsea

Second-half goals from Yoan Gouffran and Loic Remy give Newcastle United a 2-0 over Chelsea at St James's Park.

Chelsea dominated the early proceedings and John Terry crashed an 11th-minute header against the crossbar before Branislav Ivanovic's overhead kick from the rebound was deflected over.

Juan Mata saw his appeal for a penalty turned down by Lee Mason after a clumsy tackle by Mathieu Debuchy.

Chelsea continued to cause problems from set pieces and Terry went close once again with a diving header in the 36th minute, but Davide Santon was alert to smash the ball clear.

Newcastle grew into the game after the break and had a wonderful opportunity to take the lead on the hour mark, but Remy's tame effort was saved well by Petr Cech.

Gouffran was the next Magpies player to test Cech, and the 31-year-old tipped the Frenchman's effort round the post.

The Czech Republic goalkeeper was helpless to prevent Newcastle's 67th-minute opener though. Yohann Cabaye's floated free kick to the far post fell to Gouffran, who flew at the ball with a diving header which nestled into the far corner of the net.

Chelsea flooded their attack in their search for an equaliser, with Willian, Andre Schurrle and Samuel Eto'o all entering the fray.

Eto'o saw his goalbound effort blocked by the hand of Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, but the referee waved away the Chelsea protests.

Only brave Newcastle defending prevented Chelsea finding a way back into the game, as Tim Krul pushed away Willian's drive and then Debuchy threw himself in the way of Eto'o's effort 10 minutes from time.

With Chelsea stretched, Newcastle made the most of the space in midfield and wrapped up all three points with two minutes remaining.

Vurnon Anita pulled a left-wing cross back into the path of Remy, who smashed a shot against the near post and into the back of the net.
