Football Association 'distance themselves' from Roberto Mancini appointment

It is claimed that Roberto Mancini was not invited to the Royal Box at Wembley for England's meeting with Malta, despite reports to the contrary.

The Football Association reportedly has no desire to appoint Roberto Mancini as the next manager of England after the Italian appeared to put his hat in the ring to replace Sam Allardyce.

Mancini, sacked by Inter Milan in August, was present at Wembley Stadium to watch the Three Lions continue their perfect start to World Cup 2018 qualifying with a comprehensive 2-0 win over Malta on Saturday evening.

The former Manchester City boss shared a video on his personal Twitter page ahead of the game in what appeared to be prime seats, but The Sun reports that Mancini was not on the FA's guest list in the Royal Box.

Gareth Southgate has been placed in charge of England on an interim basis until the end of the year, with FA chiefs taking their time to deliberate over who should succeed Allardyce - sacked following an undercover sting by The Telegraph last month - on a long-term basis.
