John Barnes: 'England youngsters need more games'

John Barnes says that England's younger players need to be playing more regularly for their clubs.

Former England winger John Barnes has warned young players such as Danny Welbeck that they need to play more games for their clubs in order to become regulars for their country.

As well as Manchester United striker Welbeck, Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Tom Cleverley all featured for the Three Lions in their 5-0 win over San Marino at Wembley on Friday.

However, the quartet have only started in ten Premier League matches between them so far this season, and Barnes is adamant that they need to play more games for their clubs if they are to cement their places in the England side.

"What I've always said all along is that these players need to play for their clubs. [Danny] Welbeck particularly if he's going to be the future of England and [Tom] Cleverley," Barnes told talkSPORT.

"Theo [Walcott] and [Alex] Oxlade-Chamberlain aren't regulars week in, week out for their clubs. That's not going to help England in the long term if they're just going to be bit-part players."

England face Poland in Warsaw on Tuesday night.
