Greg Dyke: 'England will win World Cup soon'

FA chairman Greg Dyke insists that England will win the World Cup again one day soon.

Football Association chairman Greg Dyke has claimed that England will once again be victorious at the World Cup in the near future.

England have only won the tournament once, in 1966, and finished fourth in 1990, but failed to make it out of the group stages at the most recent contest in Rio last year.

Speaking at an event marking the fiftieth anniversary of the famous victory, Dyke said that England's unbeaten performance in qualifying for the Euros demonstrated that the side has the talent to go all the way.

"[1966] was one of the most remarkable sporting years in English history," he told Sky Sports News. "I genuinely believe the building blocks are in place to one day soon emulate the '66 winners.

"We owe it to them. We owe it to a generation of teenage dreamers to show we can do it again."

Qualification for the 2018 World Cup, to be held in Russia, begins in September. England's qualifying group includes Scotland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Lithuania and Malta.
