Everton boss Roberto Martinez has warned defender John Stones that playing for England does not guarantee his place in his club's starting lineup.
The 20-year-old made his first start for the Three Lions in their friendly win over Norway at Wembley, and then put in a solid performance in Roy Hodgson's side's victory against Switzerland in their Euro 2016 qualifier.
However, Stones has played just once for Everton this season in the Premier League, and Martinez has admitted that the Toffees have to be cautious with his development.
Martinez told reporters: "There is a role and responsibility to look after him, to give him the right education. You need to make sure the time he plays is quality time and not just because you are playing with your country – you need to be playing guaranteed time with the club.
"Stones has been a very important player for us and will carry on being so – he will play a lot of minutes this season. But we are looking at trying to progress what he did last season and that's what we are going to do.
"John is still a young man and it's not that I'm going to measure his playing time because he is still developing as a young player and needs help in that respect."
Everton face West Bromwich Albion in their Premier League clash later today.
