Galatasaray and Schalke 04 finish the opening 45 minutes tied at 1-1 in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie in Turkey.

Galatasaray and Schalke 04 have finished the first half tied at 1-1 in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie in Turkey.

The home side took the lead in the 13th minute when Burak Yilmaz flicked the ball cleverly past Joel Matip before firing past Timo Hildebrand.

Benedikt Howedes headed narrowly wide for Schalke soon after before Yilmaz saw his shot rattle the crossbar following Hildebrand's save from Didier Drogba.

Both sides showed plenty of attacking intent during the opening 45 minutes and Schalke could have levelled midway through the half, but Jefferson Farfan smashed his first-time shot over the crossbar.

With time running out in the first half, Schalke equalised when Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Farfan combined to allow Jermaine Jones to tap in.
