Paul Merson: 'Liverpool stupid to let Steven Gerrard go'

Paul Merson claims that Liverpool should have done more to keep Steven Gerrard at the club.

Paul Merson has claimed that Liverpool are making a mistake in allowing Steven Gerrard to leave.

The veteran midfielder will join Los Angeles Galaxy this summer following a 28-year association with the club.

However, Merson believes that the 34-year-old remains the best player at Anfield.

"He's still their best player and is their top scorer," he told Sky Sports News. "I can't believe they haven't kept this lad, he's world class - and they haven't got any world-class players. He's their world-class player. To let him go is really beyond me."

Gerrard's final game for Liverpool ended in disaster on Sunday as they were beaten 6-1 by Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium.
