Brendan Rodgers says that he would be interested in signing Gylfi Sigurdsson for Liverpool.

Brendan Rodgers could be about to hijack Swansea City's move for Icelandic ace Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The Northern Irishman was pushing ahead with a £6.8m deal for the 22-year-old before leaving to take charge of Liverpool.

Sigurdsson has impressed for the Swans since moving to the Liberty Stadium on a short-term loan from Hoffenheim in January.

Rodgers said that he would have no qualms about stealing Sigurdsson from under the noses of his previous employers, stating: "If he comes onto the market, I have to be interested.

"His initial chat has to be with Swansea, because he had a good period there. I said when I had the chat with the chairman [Huw Jenkins] the other day, when I told him I was going to go to Liverpool, that Gylfi came to Swansea because I was there as manager.

"I said to Huw if I speak to the kid I'll tell him to make sure he certainly comes down and speaks to the new [Swansea] manager, whoever that is, and that if he's still not comfortable with that, he's in the marketplace then — and then I have to look at him."

A clause in Rodgers's release from the Welsh club states that he cannot buy any Swansea players for 12 months.
