Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has said that he would prefer Bafetimbi Gomis to leave in January to letting the French international run down his contract.
The 28-year-old striker has made clear his desire to leave the club, and Aulas has stated that losing him on a free transfer would be bad for Les Gones.
The news could be of interest to Newcastle United and West Ham United, who have both been linked with January moves for former Saint-Etienne star.
"It is up to him to make a decision, but I would like it to be sorted out with a contract extension or a departure in January," Aulas told L'Equipe.
"A departure as free agent in June would be a failure."
Gomis has scored five goals in 13 league appearances this season.
