Robin van Persie says that Manchester United would have been happy with a 1-1 draw before their Champions League encounter with Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has admitted that he would have settled for a score draw against Real Madrid before their Champions League encounter.

Cristiano Ronaldo cancelled out Danny Welbeck's opener in the first half to end the first leg with the score 1-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.

Despite his satisfaction with the result, Van Persie believes that that it could have been better for United had he taken one of his several chances.

"It could have gone either way. We had a couple of good chances but if you said 1-1 before the game most of us would take it. It is a good result. A great game to watch," said Van Persie.

"I had three chances in the second half, especially one just after I hit the bar - I should put that in. I didn't hit it properly, with a bit of luck it could have gone in.

"We have a slight advantage. At this level I don't think these kind of teams care if they play home or away. It is half time now and we will be ready for the second leg."

The second leg takes place on March 5 at Old Trafford.
